Is it appropriate to purchase a thank you gift for a professor (to be given nearing graduation, after he has given me my assessment) who might be a future employer/referee (next year)? He has been a fantastic tutor and gave much guidance, but I don’t want to colour his future opinion on me, or feel obligated to give me a good referral etc. And if so, what is a good gift? I was thinking an engraved pen from Cross/Parker/Mont Blanc. Any thoughts?

probably not one of the mont blancs they are more of a sign of status than anything else it will probably colour the relationship a little to favorably toward you but if you fell it is owed then go for a Cross

I usually do not buy gifts for people who have taught me something and I have paid for it, no matter how helpful they were. Your college fees have not gone directly to your professer, so it would be a nice gesture to get him something, especialy if he has helped you a lot.
A bottle of wine usually does the trick (or a cigar if he smokes), but I also like the pen idea. You could carry that engraving theme into a number of gifts, how about an engraved key ring or something??

It’s appropriate as long as the gift isn’t too valuable
